Hermann was among 12 cities around the Show-Me State selected as a staging point for the 2008 Tour of Missouri, an elite, point-to-point cycling event held September 8-14.

Hermann was the starting point for Stage 6, a 110-mile road race from Hermann to St. Charles on Saturday, September 13.

The second Tour of Missouri was been extended from six to seven days after an extremely successful inaugural event in 2007. The race, which attracts riders from around the world, will showcase some of Missouri's most beautiful roads, starting in St. Joseph and ending at the Gateway Arch in St. Louis.

Hermann is for Bikers

For serious training or a leisurely family outing, Hermann is a favorite destination for bikers. A new Missouri River Bridge with a protected eight-foot bike lane provides safe access to the Katy Trail, the nation's longest rails-to-trails project. The McKittrick trailhead is just a mile north of Hermann.

Bikes may be rented at Ride, Rest & Go, located at 215 Schiller Street (573-486-9170 or 314-805-7746).

Looking for more of a challenge? If it's elevation you crave, Hermann's famous hills offer hard-core enthusiasts 400 feet of vertical climb within the city limits. Take to the open road and you'll be amid the beautiful rolling hills of Missouri Wine Country.

At day's end, return to one of Hermann's gracious B&Bs, many of which offer special services and amenities for bikers.
